So we have finally seen Aquaman, and it has inspired me to rank all of the movies within the DCEU. Before I get started these are my own opinions and what I personally think of the movies.
I loved this movie. First of it is visually stunning, with the CGI not feeling out of place or unfinished. Jason Momoa does a fantastic job as Arthur Curry. He is funny, lovable and serious. Amber Heard also does a great job as Princess Mera of Xebel. The two have great on screen chemistry and you can really see their relationship grow throughout the movie from their first scene together til their last. The costumes in this movie is also spectacular with Arthur's, Mera's, Orm's and Black Manta's all being comic accurate. My only big criticism for this film is that there are two songs that seem shoved in and out of place within the movie. Talking of songs the ending song 'Everything I need' by Skylar Grey is perfect for the moment and a great way to finish the movie.
#2- Wonder Woman
This is another fantastic movie. Gal Gadot crushes the role of Wonder Woman once again. Her back story in Themyscira was compelling and her desire to help Steve in the war when no-one else from the island would is touching. The no mans land scene will forever be one of my favourite moments from a comic book movie, as it shows all the qualities of a hero. The reason this is behind Aquaman is ,because I believe Ocean Master is a more compelling villain than Ares, as his character isn't developed as much as it could have been.
#3- Man of Steel
This isn't your traditional Superman movie. There isn't any huge heroic moment with the John Williams theme blasting out. Its all about the struggle to fit into a world where he doesn't belong. From his childhood till the present day he life has never been normal unlike everyone around him. It takes you on a journey about Clark learning how to use his powers. The beginning scene in Krypton also remains one of the best beginning scenes in a sci-fi movie to date.
#4- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
This movie gets a lot of undeserved hate. This is the first time in live action that Batman and Superman have shared a cinema screen and visually its another stunning movie. The costumes for the trinity are all fantastic and the score is one of the best superhero movie scores to date. Jesse Eisenberg provided a different take on Lex Luthor, but still a great psychotic take on the character. Henry Cavill once again provided a great grounded performance of superman. Ben Affleck's debut as Batman was a dream for DC fans with many satisfying fight scenes, all I need to say is the warehouse scene. The doomsday fight was spectacular as the holy trinity of DC team up for the final battle. The beginning of the movie was slow going and can get tiresome with all the talking. Also I do understand that Zack Synder's meaning behind the Martha scene was to make Superman more relatable to Batman and show him that he can human, but I believe that there could have been better ways to go about it than just mention a name.
#5 Justice League
I find this movie a lot of fun. The costumes once again outshine the MCU and the visuals are mostly great, with the exception from Superman's upper lip and Steppenwolf. I wasn't totally keen on Ezra Miller's take on Barry Allen at first, because he is a lot different from Grant Gustin's version, however after multiple viewings he has really grown on me and even creates my favourite scene in the movie, where Batman tells him to just save one person and then ends up saving everyone. Aquaman was my favourite character in the movie, with some badass scenes. Cyborg intrigued me, because I knew next to nothing about his character but came away wanting to learn more about him. The story of the motherboxes felt like it would have been better if the were already set up in previous films similarly to the infinity stones in the MCU. There is also tone inconsistencies throughout the movie, due to Zack Synder having to leave the project due to family problems and Joss Whedon being brought in. Overall this is a fun movie to watch, but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement.
I'll admit there is no story at all to this movie. There isn't really any character development either for the exception of Diablo. But damn this movie is fun to watch. Margot Robbie is the perfect Harley Quinn and has become a fan favourite, which gives me hope for Birds of Prey. After controversy Will Smith pulled of a fantastic Deadshot with his touching story about his daughter his focus in life. Past that the other characters didn't really get enough screen time individually to judge their character, especially Killer Croc who seemed like a third wheel for the whole movie. Jared Leto showed glimpses of a good joker, however he only got about 10 minutes in the whole movie so it's hard to say whether he is good enough or not, but with the upcoming joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix I don't think many people will want to revert back to Jared Leto for the future.
In conclusion I love these movies. DC will always have a special place in my heart as it has been a huge part of my life. The future of the DCEU looks bright with Aquaman about to reach $1 billion worldwide, and upcoming movies of Shazam and Wonder Woman 1984 both looking outstanding. If Warner Brothers play their cards right they can create a universe which is globally loved by everyone. Be on the look out for more DC content by us as there is a Shazam trailer releasing on 19th January.
Thank you so much for reading this and hope you return in the future. We would love it if you comment what your favourite movies from the DCEU.
