After an entire year of being off-air, Doctor Who has certianly returned with a bang with our first look at Jodie Whittaker's second series as The Doctor, in Series 12. Here we discuss everything that was shown in the trailer and what it could mean for the series' release in the New Year.
The trailer opens on a stunning Vineyard setting, presumably from the premiere episode. This episode has been rumoured to be a two part special, that feeds into Episode 2 which is a historical spy piece set in 1943 Paris. The Doctor and her team are all dressed for the occasion, with Whittaker's Doctor making reference to the Bond-esque tone of the story. We also get to see the Tardis team interact with Stephen Fry's currently under-wraps character, as he asks "Can we rely upon you?". Presumably Fry's character is setting them on a task to take on Lenny Henry's antagonistic character who we see shooting at the Doctor and co. as they are chased down on motorbikes.
We also see some brief references to Episode 2, which as mentioned before, is set in France- more specifically 1940s Paris. This episode is supposedly centred around Noor Inyat Khan, a British heroine of World War II renowned for her service in the Special Operations Executive.
The opening story is the most we know about, but between all that, we also get some good looks at some returning and brand new monsters coming to the series next year. We get our first look at the Cybermen, which could perhaps lead into a finale featuring an army of newly designed silver soldiers. However, what's interesting is that we have already been teased another cyberman story with Mary Shelley, which these stills look like they could be from, especially considering the almost zombie/Frankenstein-esque look of the lone ranger. Made up of spare parts, we can see this cyberman features an amalgamation of the RTD era Cybus cyberman armour, Nightmare in Silver (Series 7-10) cyberman head, and a Mondasian cyberman arm.
We also see the return of the Judoon, which was announced at the top end of this year in a promotional still. Where their story fits and what's going on remains to be seen, but we sure are excited to see them intergalactic rhino's back!
The Doctor in voiceover also claims she feels 'something's coming', which hints at a series arc that was much amiss in the prior series, could it be another returning foe? Would it be too early to bring back the Master? The Timeless Child? Who knows.
We also as mentioned see some new monsters and creatures, and frankly we have no idea what any of them are, but here they are anyway! The third image shows what looks to be some sort of knight, phasing into the TARDIS, which was something discussed in an interview with companions Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill in a recent magazine article.
We also finally get to see our Tardis team in full form, with Ryan, Graham and Yaz all getting their own shots, as they talk about their close bond as a "family"- could this hint at a family fallout between the Doctor and her friends? This could be interesting, as the companions may want to stay despite the risk of danger, putting the Doctor to blame if anything goes wrong.
Doctor Who is set to return in early 2020.
