This review does NOT contain spoilers for 'The Witchfinders'
Doctor Who takes on 17th Century Witches this week, and unlike some of the characters, this episode certainly doesn't sink.
Team TARDIS find themselves in the mysterious Bilehurst Cragg, a village unknown to the outside world, with dark secrets within. And as King James I arrives into the land, with him are some villainous creatures that are sure to scare children and adults alike.
This episode is a very enjoyable watch, again going back to what makes Doctor Who, Doctor Who. With a cauldron of twists and turns, frights and laughs, Joy Wilkinson- the writer of 'The Witchfinders' has a perfect balance of what makes a good episode of DW. Each character gets plenty to do, with Ryan getting arguably his best lines yet- especially with his interactions with one of our main antagonists (or protagonists?).
Jodie, I feel, gives her joint strongest performance with 'The Demons of the Punjab' here, having a balance between quirky, witty lines and some seriously strong dialogue when confronting Becka Savage (Siobhan Finneran) and King James (Alan Cumming) of whom both give damn good performances! The latter is a character I would definitely like to see return, and given what Cumming said in an interview earlier this year, this could very well be the case.
The threat for this episode is a little strange, going from very intense to arguably a little laughable, but allows for some very strong lines from The Doctor.
Overall, this episode is a very fun watch, one with lots of surprises and is one you could easily re-watch (unlike some of this episode's previous installments- Chibnall I'm looking at you.). Wilkinson, you have done Doctor Who proud, and take it from me, you are welcome to the show again! It truly was a wicked experience.
