SPOILER WARNING: If these theories turn out to be true! Oh, and spoiler's for Infinity War- I mean, it's been out for like 2 months now so where have you been, go and see it NOW!
Since the brutal ending to this summer's Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans have been scratching their heads as to how Ant-Man and the Wasp will fit into the MCU timeline, and whether it will finish much like the events of Avengers 3- at least there won't be too much dust to wipe up.
We've been told in multiple press releases and presumed from the trailers that the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp will be set between Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), but how close to the snapping of the fingers will our two tiny friends get? Who will bite the dust? Let's discuss.
The sequel to 2015's Ant-Man (Out on 6th July 2018 in US, 3rd August 2018 in UK- yes, it's crazy), takes place in San Francisco, away from the major action of 'Infinity War' and leaving Scott (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), also known as the Wasp, more or less scot free- see what I did there? We have some sense of what that might be: First, we know from casting information that the plot of the film will concern the search for the original Wasp, Janet van Dyne, who will be played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Fans will recall that in 'Ant-Man', Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) told the story about how Janet was lost in the “Quantum Realm” — the space between molecules and somewhere we could be revisiting in Avengers 4. In order to stop a missile from hitting the U.S, Janet removed the regulator from her suit, which put a limit on how small she would shrink, and became so small she was able to fit between the molecules of the missile.
Janet disarmed the missile, but without her regulator she was unable to return to her normal size. As Pym explained it, she was lost in the Quantum Realm, shrinking forever and unable to escape that strange, tiny universe. But Scott managed to shrink down to the Quantum Realm during the climax of “Ant-Man,” and proved it was possible to return from it. And with Pfeiffer cast as a present day Janet, it seems she’ll be returning from there too.
Based upon filming pictures, Ant Man definitely survives the events of his second solo outing, and it seems he will get a much bigger role in Avengers 4 as he spends time on set with the survivors of the snap. However, in recent concept art released/leaked (see below), for the upcoming Avengers movie, only Ant Man appears- where is his female counterpart? Could she be the victim of Thanos? It would certainly provide for a great ending and a perfect reason for Scott to become more involved with the original characters left behind. Only time will tell.
