THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 EPISODE 3 OF FLEABAG (BBC)
You remember last week when I wrote that the series was likely to dip in quality after the slamdunk of Episode 1? I'll eat my words. Episode 3 of Season 2 of Fleabag is easily the best episode of the entire show, trust me.
The episode is easily one of the most fun watches, giving us more of the addictive humour between Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag and Sian Clifford's Claire, putting the former in a particularly formal situation which, as you can imagine, goes tits up (pun intended). The event goes off to a wobbly start going from smashed awards to food poisoning, and the awkward meeting of Claire's partner: Claire.
The episode then moves smoothly onto a different tone of scene, giving us perhaps the most beautiful, thought-provoking and really rather shocking moments in the entirety of the programme. I'm not going to spoil it here (even though this is a spoiler review) but if you've seen the episode, you will know what I'm talking about when I say Phoebe Waller-Bridge gives us a whole new element to her character of Fleabag, that frankly we've never expected to see before. But it's a welcome surprise, as it allows for her to come to terms with herself and those around her.
We finish with some great interaction between Fleabag and the Priest (Andrew Scott) in which they discuss their feelings and Scott's character quashes the idea of possibly a romantic relationship between the pair which leaves for a bitter-sweet taste in the mouth of the audience. We also get a fascinating scene that carries on from Episode 2 where Fleabag's self-aware 4th wall breaking is becoming increasingly influential in the storyline itself and merely isn't a gimmick for the audience, how does the Priest recognise Fleabag's moments of self awareness? Oh and don't forget that incredible fox scene!
Overall, this episode stands out as easily the best yet. I reiterate 'yet', as I once thought S2 Episode 1 was the best. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, you've got me hooked.
