So here it is, the final trailer for the Skywalker Saga. The trailer is our final look at what Episode IX has to offer and it seems that JJ Abrams is hoping we can give this rathy shaky sequel trilogy the best send-off possible. Many fans- myself included- are now left hoping that they're saving the best elements for the movie itself.
The trailer opens with a compilation of shots featuring the sequel trilogy's main leads including Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Lando (Billy Dee Williams) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran).
Focussing on Rey, we follow her through a forested planet- could this be Endor? And then we get a fantastic transition from what looks like a scene straight from Jumanji to her clambering up through the ruins of the Death Star. This throws me back to Episode VII with Rey's original role as a scavenger hunter. We also see Finn on what could be the rumoured Exogol planet or Pasana.
We then see the first of multiple shots featuring Rey and Kylo fighting on the partially submerged ruins of the Death Star- as Rey claims "People keep telling me they know me... no-one does" and while many are using this quote (rightly so) as an excuse to criticise Disney's lack of character for these new leads, in the context of the film itself, could it be hinting at Rey harnessing her dark side tendencies as teased in the previous trailer? With Kylo Ren's (Adam Driver) response being "But I do", it's safe to say that the only character that has got close to understanding Rey is Ben Solo himself.
The trailer then gives us a series of hints to the return of the Emperor himself, Palpatine, with his new throne room - based upon the same colour grading - set on this icy planet that could be the rumoured Kijimi. We also get our first look at (the behind of) The Emperor later on in the trailer. We also hear, Emperor Palpatine (Iain McDiarmid): "Long have I waited," says Palpatine, as Star Destroyers appear from underground. "Your coming together is your undoing." which reminds me of the famous line from Return of the Jedi "Your overconfidence is your weakness" / "Your faith in your friends is yours".
After a few shots of a fleet of classic Star Wars ships, fronted by the Millennium Falcon, we get a heart breaking moment featuring C3-PO in which he responds to Poe's question "What you doing there Threepio?" with "Taking one last look, Sir, at my friends"- could this be a look at the final moments of one of our favourite droids? Based upon the scene in the previous trailer where he has glowing red eyes, perhaps C3-PO goes undercover as a First Order/Sith droid but we might never get him back as the original droid we know and love in order to sacrifice himself for the benefit of the galaxy.
We then hear Luke (Mark Hammil) as he talks about how "Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi- your destiny" with clips inter-cut of our sequel trilogy crew, predominantly Rey as she embraces Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa.
The final moments of this trailer are certainly epic, featuring a conglomeration of all our favourite heroes, villains, ships, lightsaber battles and more as the trailer climaxes. We get to see Rey and Kylo fighting side by side again (reminiscent of 'The Last Jedi's' famous (or infamous) fight scene in Supreme Leader Snoke's throne room) as they shatter what looks to be a person frozen in carbonite.
We also get a brilliant visual (reminiscent of the final moments of Avengers: Endgame) as Naomi Ackie's character Jannah rides forward on a horse-like creature alongside the Resistance.
After more shots of Rey and Kylo fighting, featuring a screaming Finn on the remnants of the Death Star (could he witness the demise of Rey at the hand of Kylo?- this could make for a truly interesting twist in the story), the trailer closes with a closeup of Rey in the throne room of Palpatine, teary eyed, as the voiceover of Luke Skywalker and Leia say "The Force will be with you... always".
Will you be buying your tickets now for Star Wars Episode IX 'The Rise of Skywalker'? What did you think to the final trailer?
