It's Sunday and so it's Weekly Oddity time, our roundup of the week's biggest news stories in the entertainment industry.
Monday 7th May 2018: The Russo Brothers tease Avengers 4 title
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Infinity War directors, the Russo brothers revealed "Avengers: Forever" is the closest Avengers 4 guess they've heard thus far, prompting Joe to jokingly say "The actual title is The Avengers: Almost Forever." He then added: "I don't think there are any comics that correlate to it. I think we're in pretty fresh territory with Avengers 4. If anything, I think it's interesting after to go back and look at some of the Marvel films and view them through a different lens. But I can't think of any comics in particular that would have value."
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously admitted that their decision to withhold the title has "backfired" for them, seeing the built-up anticipation for it now. For a while, Infinity Gauntlet was among the most popular guesses out there however since the Russo's brothers new teasers, it seems fans including us will be back to the drawing board...
Tuesday 8th May 2018: A Quiet Place Part II to focus on other survivors.
A Quiet Place director John Krasinski says that the surprise horror smash hit's upcoming sequel may focus on different survivors of the alien apocalypse:
"The thing that I loved in the movie, where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive?"
Krasinski went on to say: "In the extreme these characters are going through, there’s no room to think about that. They’re there, there’s an old man who’s about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what’s going on elsewhere at this same time."
Wednesday 9th May: DC's Birds of Prey Movie Could Be 'R' Rated According to Margot Robbie.
In an interview with Collider for her latest film, Terminal, Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie revealed that she had pitched a HQ spinoff movie - one based on the Birds of Prey comics - that is now being rewritten by Christina Hodson and directed by Cathy Yan. While she wants the movie to focus on Harley and her friends, one point of contention was that the film be rated R.
Robbie stated: “I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."
One of the chief complaints of 2016's Suicide Squad was that it was PG-13 when it clearly should've been rated R. If Birds of Prey releases as an R-rated movie and is successful, then that might pave the way for Suicide Squad 2 to also be rated R. But we'll just have to wait and see what happens on that front. Overall, while Harley's immediate future in the DCEU remains unclear, what is clear is that Warner Bros. isn't letting go of the character anytime soon
Thursday 10th May: Captain Marvel casts Annette Bening in an undisclosed role.
Four time Oscar-nominee Annette Bening is joining the cast of Marvel Studio's Captain Marvel. Brie Larson is set to lead the MCU's very first female solo movie as production continues to move along in Los Angeles.
Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) are likely to be only appearing in the Earth-based scenes, while the rest of the cast lean towards the cosmos. Ben Mendelsohn is playing the villain, while Jude Law is set to play Mar-Vell. There's also Gemma Chan (Humans) as Minn-Erva and the returns of Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou as Kree soldiers Ronan the Accuser (Previously seen in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1) and Korath the Pursuer.
While THR has revealed that her role is that of a scientist, Variety's Justin Kroll says that Bening could in-fact be playing the role of Carol Danvers mother .
Friday 11th May 2018: Obi-Wan Kenobi Spinoff Movie to Begin Filming Spring 2019 (RUMOUR)
The Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff movie is reportedly in pre-production and will begin filming next spring. Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, and they revealed a sequel trilogy in the Skywalker saga would be complemented by standalone films, a project centering on the famous Jedi Master had long been rumored. Ewan McGregor, who portrayed Obi-Wan in the prequels, is completely up to reprise the role, but he has cautioned fans several times over the past few years that it's all "just talk" for now.
According to FanthaTracks, the Obi-Wan creative team is currently making their way through pre-production (concept art, props, storyboards) and they plan to start filming at Pinewood Studios in London after Episode IX wraps later this year. The "main shoot" wouldn't start until April 2019, but FanthaTracks notes Obi-Wan will "move onto stages" come January 2019.
