The Venom teaser trailer was released today and WOW did it shock us! The symbiote didn't show up, however the trailer was definitely worth waiting for and it is very apparent as to why Sony chose Tom Hardy to play the anti-hero Eddie Brock/Venom.
The trailer opens up with Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) in an MRI machine. This moment set the tone of the rest of the trailer. In the comics there was a point where Eddie was dying of cancer and turned into Anti-Venom to cure his cancer so a similar thing could be happening here but he turns into Venom instead due to Spiderman not being in the film.
Next up we have a beautiful shot of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. Eddie Brock's home is San Francisco so it only makes sense as to why we see a skyline shot of it here. Eddie also starts saying "Everyone's got their thing"
The next few shots are Eddie walking around in the city as he says "Maybe it's a breakup" and then Anne Weying (Michelle Williams) who in the comics is a successful lawyer ,but at one point gets shot so Eddie separates himself from the symbiote so it can heal her and she become She-Venom. Maybe this could happen in a later film? Also in the comics the two are divorced however in this shot she is in the hospital so maybe they are still together and she's waiting for him?
We next see Eddie in a facility with all the lights off except for one section which is illuminated. We presume he isn't supposed to be there. We also see him lift a tarp up and reveal some pieces which look like is from an alien. Maybe the symbiote was bonded to something else before it came to earth? He also says during this section "a death"
What we see next could be very important. This is presumably how the Venom symbiote arrived on earth. This could either be a human creation such as a satellite or an alien spaceship, as in the comics the symbiote has arrived on earth in multiple ways. Brock continues and says " an accident." We are starting to believe that what Brock says is what is shown on screen so this ship crash is an accident, the facility above is where a death happened (probably the alien in the ship), and he might have just broken up with Anne, however nothing is confirmed.
Eddie wakes up from whatever state he is. We also see Dr. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) open the door to a van which has the symbiote in the back of it. This is a key scene ,because its means that the symbiote doesn't bond to Eddie straight away and the government will know about the creature prior to it bonding to Eddie. He continues on to says "whatever it is, it use to be one thing and now your something else."
We are shown a lot of quick scenes which don't show a lot, but some of them could be of importance. We see Brock on a motorbike in a chase as two cars are tipped over. Could this be how he gets into hospital? The scene just after shows him running out of the facility he was in before so maybe he bonds with the symbiote in the lab and destroys it leading to the car chase which puts him in hospital. As he clearly has the powers in the hospital as we'll see in a minute. Next we see some computers get thrown everywhere and we're curious as to what caused this as Venom doesn't have telekinesis. Brock starts his final line of dialogue for the trailer as he says "We all have our own problems, our own issues, our own.... demons."
Finally we see Eddie starting to freak out in the MRI machine. If you look closely you can see the symbiote coming through the veins of Eddie as well as his teeth starting to turn spikey. In the comics Venom is vulnerable to certain sonic frequencies so we assume that the MRI is starting to cause pain for the symbiote which means Eddie becomes hurt as well. This scene is really well acted from Tom Hardy and the standout scene in the trailer as it really makes you believe he is in pain.
So there we have it. Everything you need to know about the Venom teaser trailer. This is one of our favourite trailers this week and definitely one of the most anticipated films this year its a shame we have to wait 8 months until its release. We'll definitely do a villian profile for Venom and Carnage (who is also in the film) closer to the film.
